Trauma-Informed Care and Coaching

The certification program provides foundational trauma-informed care training for faith-based coaches and counselors who want to confidently support those impacted by trauma. As the mental health crisis grows, more people are carrying wounds that affect their emotions, relationships, behavior, and faith, and many who serve them feel unprepared to respond effectively. Grounded in SAMHSA’s principles and enriched by leading Christian experts, this program equips you with practical tools to recognize trauma’s impact and guide others toward healing, resilience, and Christ-centered restoration.

Faith-based trauma-informed care and coaching combines psychological healing frameworks with Christian or spiritual principles. It recognizes that emotional, physical, and relational wounds deeply impact a person’s faith and daily life, and approaches recovery through a safe, Christ-centered lens.

Core Principles

  • SAMHSA Alignment: Many faith-based programs build on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) trauma principles—focusing on safety, trustworthiness, peer support, collaboration, empowerment, and cultural/spiritual humility.
  • Universal Trauma Precautions: Communities and leaders treat everyone as if they may have experienced trauma, avoiding shame-based language or rigid "sin-detector" attitudes. [5, 6]
  • Holistic View of the Person: Humans are viewed as whole beings—body, soul, and spirit—where spiritual care complements clinical or emotional stabilization.

Care vs. Coaching Roles

  • Trauma-Informed Coaches: Focus on the present and future. They help clients build life goals, manage daily routines, establish safety plans, and improve relationships, but they do not diagnose or treat mental health disorders.
  • Biblical/Faith Counselors & Specialists: Provide deeper scriptural and psychological guidance for past trauma, often working alongside or referring clients to licensed clinical therapists. Programs like the Christian Trauma Healing Network and the Nothing Is Wasted Biblical Trauma Care Specialist offer specialized training for lay and professional helpers.
